2000-2001 Winter Track

Boys Results

Season Highlights:  The team was coached by Jim Schlentz and assisted by Doug Phillips.  In their 2nd year of varsity, the team accomplished a large amount of firsts, highlighted by our 1st individual state champion, Jorge Ventura in the 1600 meters, and our 1st All-American honors, the 4 x 1 mile team of Israel Payan, Jesus Salinas, Andrew Leimbach and Jorge Ventura.  Team highlights included finishing 3rd in the Monmouth County Championships, 5th in the Group 1 State Championships and 10th in the Shore Conference.  The Cougars also finished 2nd in the Freehold District Championship.  Individual highlights included  Jorge Ventura winning the Monmouth County and placing 2nd in the Shore Conference Champs (1600 meters).  Israel Payan 3rd at the County Champs and 5th at the Shore Conference and Group 1 State Champs (3200 meters).  Craig Stivala 4th at the State meet (high jump).  The 4 x 400 placed 3rd at County Champs and 5th at the State Champs.

Post-Season Highlights:  Jorge Ventura was named 2nd team All-State Group II by the Star Ledger and 1st team All-Shore in the 1600 meters by the Asbury Park Press.  He was also named 1st team All-Shore and All-County by the Shore Coaches Association.  Jorge was also named All-Freehold District 1st team for the 800 meters and 1600 meters along with Israel Payan in the 3200 meters and the 4 x 400 meter team of Jesus Salinas, Andrew Leimbach, Craig Stivala, Joe Orrico and Jorge.  Coach Schlentz was named Shore Conference Winter Track Coach of the year by the Asbury Park Press.

Monmouth County Relays

@ Red Bank  12/23/00

The 2nd place in the 4x800 was the first time the school had placed in an event at the Monmouth County Relays.  Jesus, after dropping the baton at the start, caught up and handed off in 7th.  Andrew moved up to 6th after going out hard.  Israel then moved past 4 runners to move to 2nd place, catching the 2nd place runner just before the handoff.  Jorge then put 10 seconds on the pack with his school record relay split to finish off the school record.  Israel also took the team from 9th to 4th in the distance medley, before we fell back to 7th, and then finally finishing 9th, after the unseeded race.

Ultima Holiday Classic 

@ NYC Armory  12/27/00

The team set school records in both the Distance Medley and 4 x 800.  In the Distance Medley, Jorge handed off with a 5 sec lead over South Lakes, VA (minus Alan Webb).  South Lakes moved into 1st past Andy during the 400 as Andy held onto 2nd.  Jesus and Israel stayed in 2nd the rest of the way.  In the 4 x 800, Jesus led off in 13th with Andy keeping it there.  Israel moved the team up to 9th and Jorge took us up one more spot.

Monmouth County Champs

@ Red Bank  1/6/01

The boys finish tied for 3rd in the team scoring with Monmouth Reg.  Jorge Ventura wins the school's 1st County Championship with a last 800 of 2:09 in the 1600 meters.  Israel Payan breaks 10:00 and finishes 3rd in the 3200 meters and then teams with Jorge, Jesus Salinas and Andy Leimbach to finish 3rd in the 4x400 relay.

Using a total lack of bad timing, sickness slowed the DMR team and falling off a dirt bike kept the 4x800 from it's gold medal goals. The two teams finished with 3rd and 5th place finishes, respectively.

Group 1 State Championships

The boys finish 5th as a team as they score 18 points and send 3 individuals and the 4x400 relay team to the Meet of Champions.  The highlights were Jorge Ventura's State Championship in the 1600, Craig Stivala's 4th place in the high jump (in his 1st high jump competition of the year), Israel Payan's 5th place in the 3200, and the 5th place by the 4x400 meter relay team of Stivala, Jesus Salinas, Andrew Leimbach, and Ventura. 

Freehold District Championships

@ Red Bank  1/29/01

With a previous history of having finished in last place in 2000 and having had no Freehold District champions, Colts Neck breaks out with four individual champions and one relay champion. Add the Most Outstanding Athlete award to Jorge Ventura and a 2nd place team finish (Howell 69 to CN 62 and you have the makings of an outstanding night.

The team finished in 10th place, it's highest finish.  Jorge Ventura was 2nd in the 1600 after a hard fought battle with Nat Glackin of CBA.  Israel Payan was 5th in the 3200.

Ridgewood Varsity Classic

@ NYC Armory  2/12/01

In the final regular season trip to the armory, the 4 x 800 meter relay team finished 6th but missed the qualifying time for the nationals by 1.1 seconds with an 8:13.1.  It was a Freehold Regional High School District record.  Craig Stivala qualified for the Easterns in the long jump with a jump of 19' 04" and also set a new 400 school record of 53.2.

Eastern State Championships

@ NYC Armory  2/20/01

In the 1st trip to the Easterns for the Cougars, they finished 12th in the distance medley, running their best time of the year.  The team also had Jorge make the 800 and Israel make the mile but they decided not to double back.  Craig Stivala was too sick to run the 400 so Andy filled in with a personal best.

Nike Indoor Classic 

(National Scholastic Champs)

@ Landover, Maryland  3/10-3/11/01

The team, chasing their first All-American status (top 6 finishers), had Jorge move into 6th in the 2nd to last lap, only to be told he was finished a lap too early as he was starting to rev it up.  The team was announced as 3rd place until Coach Schlentz told the officials they had run a lap short due to the official.  They were then disqualified.  After a review, the games committee decided to present the team with the 6th place medals and All-American certificates.  The finish would not be included in the final results due to the lack of a finish time.  It turned out that the now new 6th place Cardinal Gibbons of NC and 8th place Hillsborough of NJ also did not complete the full distance.  They were not disqualified because they did not report themselves.  The 4 x 800, using the same team as the 4 x 1 mile, finished 3rd in their heat and 11th overall the 2nd day of the two day meet.  They actually were leading their heat until the last leg.
