2004-5 Winter Track
Girls Results
Season Highlights: The
team was coached by Jim Schlentz and assisted by Joe Lykes and Emily Bohn.
You name it and it happened this year. From the girls getting their first
points in the Group III State Relays and ending up in 2nd place to Ashley
Higginson becoming the school's first All-Groups Champion. Team
highlights: The girls finished 2nd at the Group III State Relay
Championships, 4th at the State Group III Individual Championships and 2nd in
the Monmouth County Champs. Individual highlights:
Ashley Higginson winning the 3200 at the State Meet of Champions, as well as
winning the 1600 at the Shore Conference and Monmouth County meets and the 3200
in the State Group III meet and the Monmouth County meet, and finally finishing
4th at the National Championships to become the school's first individual
All-American; Gretchen Volherbst and Amy Lewis winning the State Group III
Pole Vault Relay; Jessica Pagliano and Rose Lang winning the State Group III
High Jump Relay and Jessica also winning the Monmouth County individual
title. The 4 x 1 mile relay running the #4 time in NJ history and the #1
time in NJ in 2005 as well as the "B" 4 x 1 mile running the #3 time
in NJ for 2005. Finally, the 4 x 800 meter relay running the #3 time in NJ
for 2005 and the #30 time in NJ history.
Post-Season Highlights: Ashley
Higginson was named 1st team All-State All-Group by New Jersey Track and 1st team All-Shore Conference
in the 3200 meters ( Asbury
Park Press and Star Ledger). The 4 x 1 mile relay of Jackie Austin, Ashley Higginson,
Kristen O'Dowd, and Danielle Plenzo was named 1st team All-Groups All-State and
the same girls also made up the 4 x 800 meter relay which was named 3rd team
All-Groups All-State by New Jersey
Track. Rose Lang was named 3rd team All-State Group III in the high
jump. Ashley was named 1st team All-Monmouth County and Jessica Pagliano
(high jump) was named 3rd team by the Star
Ledger and Shore Coaches Ass. The two, Ashley (1600 and
3200) and Jessica (high jump), also made 1st team All-Freehold District with Amy Lewis (55 hurdles). Danielle
Plenzo, Jackie Austin, Gretchen Volherbst and Kim Lang were
named honorable mention All-Freehold District.

|
|
It is a world of the individual against himself, it is his
aspirations challenging the capacity of his body. There is no
enemy but the straining of every muscle. It is not a sport, it
is a life of work and precision and sometimes it is rewarded by a
cheer or a press clipping. But when the press clipping turns
yellow, there will still be the memory of that time, perhaps only a
moment, when the crowd faded to nothing and the only sound was
breathing and the only feeling was the ache of endurance and
pushing, pushing until the body soared with the mind, and no one
else knew what it was to strive. |

with a 2nd place in the 800 (2:24.2.) Rose Lang finished 2nd in the high

The girls made history! They had never scored a point at
this meet and they came back with not one, but two State Champions as the
team finished 2nd place overall in Group III. Gretchen Volherbst
became the 1st NJ girl to clear a height in the pole vault at the State
Championships (it is a new indoor event) and was followed by Amy Lewis as they
both cleared 8' 00" to win the pole vault. Rose Lang cleared 5'
02" and Jessie Pagliano 4' 10" to win the high jump. The
Distance Medley also scored by taking 5th.

the Pole Vault by more misses. The Cougars finished 4th as a team, our
highest finish ever!

County Champions as Ashley Higginson won the 2 mile and one mile and Jessie
Pagliano won the high jump. Danielle Plenzo added a 3rd in the 2 mile and
a 5th in the 1 mile to make up the team's 38 points.

The 4 x 1 mile team ran the same time that finished 6th last
year but it was good for only 12th this year. Still, the top performance
by a NJ team this year as the "B" team's time was #3 on the NJ list
for 2005.
