2005 Spring Track

Girls Results

Season Highlights:  The team was coached by  Joe Lykes (throws, jumps) and assisted by Jim Schlentz (distances), Kevin Hein (sprints), Emily Bohn (hurdles,jumps), Vince Tesi (shot put), Tim Mulligan (distances), Tinishia Bass (throws) finished with a record of 6 wins and 0 losses. Season highlights: These included Ashley Higginson finishing 2nd in the 3200 at the Meet of Champions and 3rd in the 3000 at the prestigious Penn Relays, the girls winning the Freehold District championship for the 1st time and winning the Shore Conference A Central division title for the 3rd year in a row.  Team highlights: The team was 3rd in the Central Jersey Group III Champs, 3rd in the Monmouth County Champs and won the Holmdel Relays team title.  Individual highlights: Ashley Higginson won the 3200 and was 2nd in the 1600 at the Group III State Champs, she also won the 1600 and 3200 at the Central Jersey Group III Champs with Amy Lewis, Melanie Mahoney, Gretchen Volherbst, Jessica Pagliano, Kim Lang and Danielle Plenzo also placing top 6.  Ashley was 1600 Shore Conference Champion and also won the 1600 and 3200 at the Monmouth County Champs.  At the Freehold District Championships, Jessica (high jump and long jump), Amy (javelin and 100 hurdles), Ashley (1600 and 3200), Gretchen (pole vault), and Jackie Austin (triple jump) were all champions.

Post-Season Highlights:  Ashley Higginson was named 2nd team All-State All-Groups in the 3200 meters by the Star Ledger and New Jersey Track magazine.  Ashley (3200) was named 1st team All-State Group III by the Star Ledger.  Ashley (3200) was 1st team All-Shore with Gretchen Volherbst (pole vault) 3rd team by the Asbury Park Press. Ashley (3200) was named 1st team All-Monmouth County with Gretchen (pole vault) and Jessica Pagliano (long jump) 2nd team and Danielle Plenzo (1600) and Amy Lewis (javelin) 3rd team by the Star Ledger.  Ashley (1600 & 3200), Amy (100 hurdles & javelin), Jessica (long jump & high jump), Gretchen (pole vault), and Jackie Austin (triple jump) were all named 1st team All-Freehold District by the News Transcript.  Meryl Wimberly (200), Kathleen Herrick (200), Danielle Plenzo (3200), Kim Lang (3200) and Melanie Mahoney (javelin) were named honorable mention All-Freehold District.

Girls

It is a world of the individual against himself, it is his aspirations challenging the capacity of his body.  There is no enemy but the straining of every muscle.  It is not a sport, it is a life of work and precision and sometimes it is rewarded by a cheer or a press clipping.  But when the press clipping turns yellow, there will still be the memory of that time, perhaps only a moment, when the crowd faded to nothing and the only sound was breathing and the only feeling was the ache of endurance and pushing, pushing until the body soared with the mind, and no one else knew what it was to strive.

The girls win their first Freehold District spring track title as they overwhelm the competition winning by 59 pts.  Amy Lewis scored 32 points with two 1sts, and two 3rds; Jackie Austin scored 30 pts with a 1st, two 2nds and a 4th; Ashley Higginson and Jessica Pagliano both won two events to score 20 pts each; and Gretchen Volherbst won the pole vault.  In all, the girls won 8 of the 16 events to score a total of 162 pts.

The Cougar girls are in 1st place after the first day with Ocean waiting to make their move on the 2nd day.  Ashley Higginson pulled away from a big pack after the 800 to pull away to win by 5 secs with Danielle Plenzo 5th, Gretchen Volherbst was 2nd in the pole vault with Amy Lewis 6th.  Amy came back to finish 3rd in the javelin and Jessica Pagliano finished 3rd in the long jump.  The Cougars have 31.5 pts with 4 teams tied at 14.

The Cougar girls finish 3rd as a team, 2.5 pts out of 2nd.  Ashley Higginson adds 3200 title on the 2nd day and Jessica Pagliano ties for 6th in high jump.

Group III State Champs

@ Egg Harbor 6/3-6/4/05

1st Day - Pouring rain with a stiff breeze down the homestretch.  The throws and 400 hurdles were flooded.  In the 1600, Ashley takes the lead with 800 meters to go but can't shake 2:10 800 meter runner, Renee Tomlin who runs 4:57.  Ashley ends up 3rd with a PB/school record 5:01.25.

2nd Day - No rain but close to 98 percent humidity which made the air thick.  Ashley Higginson sits in the pack through a slow 1st 1600 of 5:33.  After another 400 of 84, she runs 80-79-76 to win by 5 secs and get her 1st spring track state title.  The team finished 12th.
