From left to right: Coach Jim Schlentz, Coach Rich Concato, Dave Gaines, Kevin Robinson, Zach Tedoff, and Andy Leimbach |
The Cougars had started the season running a 8:35.8 4 x 800 at the NYC Armory with a team of Andy Leimbach, Zach Tedoff, Justin Franklin and Dave Gaines. Andy had lost his shoe in the race and all four were running their 2nd race of the day. A sub 8:30 could win the Group II State Relays if they could all get stronger. They then brought their time down to 8:29.4 at the Lavino Relays at Lawrenceville while using Kevin Robinson in place of Justin Franklin and Chris Shoen in place of Zach Tedoff. Running at Princeton University on a track that didn't allow spikes, Andy was about 5 secs off his indoor best in 2:08.0. Kevin kept the team close with a 2:11.7, one sec off his best time. Zach moved the team up to first with a winter track personal best of 2:06.1. Dave took the pace out quick and expanded the lead with a personal best of 2:00.4. It was a season best for the team despite running on a much slower track. Team Splits:

The girls Pole Vault was being held for the first time in the State Relays. The pole vault had never been contested at any Shore area meets so the girls had no experience in indoor pole vaulting before the winter. In fact, they had only competed in one meet before the State Relays and that was a meet in NY. Senior Amy Lewis had cleared 7' 00" and senior Gretchen Volherbst had not competed at all. The week before the meet, the opening heights were revealed. Since Princeton only had one pole vault pit for both the boys and the girls, covering all four groups that were competing that day, they decided the opening height should be 8' 00", to save time. Amy had cleared 8' 06" the previous spring but Gretchen's best was only 7' 00". With Gretchen vaulting 1st, she cleared a personal best by 1 foot and became the first girl in NJ history to clear a height at the State Relays. Amy then cleared it as well as they became the only team to have both members clear the opening height. They won the event with a total of 16' 00". They both would clear 8' 06" later in the winter season. Gretchen would then set a school and Freehold District outdoor record, clearing 10' 00" that spring. The Cougars finished 2nd as a team after having previously never scored a point at the State Relays.

Senior Rose Lang had been a student at Colts Neck HS for her freshman and sophomore years before moving to Freehold Twp HS her junior year. Moving back to CN for her senior year, she had opened her winter track season, tying her personal best of 5' 02", at the NYC Armory. Sophomore Jessie Pagliano had cleared 4' 10" the previous spring but had not cleared an opening height so far in the 2005 season. That would change as the opening height was only 4' 00". Jessie would clear 4' 10", the 7th best Group III performance of the day and Rose would tie with 3 others for the best jump of the meet, equaling her personal best of 5' 02". Their total of 10' 00" would beat Middletown South and Mt Olive who both cleared 9' 10". Rose would jump no higher that season but Jessie would clear 5' 00".

The Cougars had started the season running 11:00.86 at the Holiday Relays in the NYC Armory with Forys anchoring in 4:17.6. They would have to improve the first three legs to have a shot at winning the Group III State Relays. They followed that with a 10:36.3 at the Lavino Relays in Lawrenceville, which was the #8 time in the US at the time. They were now the favorites. Brenden Krewer led off in 3:20.2 for the 1200 on the slow Princeton track, Hunter Karass followed with a 55.0 in the 400 and then Shane Hart ran 2:09.5. The times for Hunter and Shane were season bests at the time for both of them. Craig Forys went out hard, took the lead, pulled away and then eased back to win by 6 seconds. He came back in the Sprint Medley Relay which finished.4th. The DMR would later substitute Evan Stivala into the 400 and the team would finish 3rd at the National Championship meet in 10:19.66 with Forys anchoring in 4:05.9. Team Splits:

The Cougars DMR started the season with a bang at the Holiday Relays in the NYC Armory, running a meet record of 12:05.37 in the prestigous meet, which was the #8 time in NJ history at the time. In the Group III State Relays, they would be running against Roxbury, who had beat runner-up CN to win the Meet of Champions in cross country. Roxbury had set a meet record of 12:26.71 the previous year and had everyone back. Ashley Higginson ran a huge opening leg of 3:38.9 to give CN the early lead. Meryl Wimberley, who had recently moved from the sprints to the 400 ran 61.8 to keep the lead. With the Roxbury team in 2nd and chasing, Allison Linnell went out hard and kept the lead running 2:25.1. With Roxbury still chasing behind, Briana Jackucewicz went out in sub 5:00 pace and held on for a 5:02.2 1600 relay leg to win by 1.8 seconds. The time was an All-Groups meet record as well as a Group III record, beating Roxbury's 2005 time. The top two teams lapped all but the 3rd place team. The team would compete once more in the Easterns States Championships and finish 3rd in 12:01.40. They would then skip the DMR at the Nationals to run the 4 x mile and set a new State record in winning their first National Championship. Team Splits:

The Group III State Relays was just the 2nd meet of the year for the Cougars. Earlier in the meet, they had lost a great Distance Medley Relay dual with Southern Reg, as the two teams had run the year's #1 and #2 times in the US, at that point of the season. The Cougars had run a 4 x 800 in the first meet (9:54.24), in which everyone was running in their 2nd race of the day. They would need a much faster time to beat a deadly Lenape team. Morgan Clark led off the team but fell back into the pack with a 2:30.0. Kristen O'Dowd ran a great race to move up into 3rd running 2:23.9. Allison Linnell then moved into 2nd with another great leg of 2:23.0. Ashley Higginson was coming back from a 4:55.2 1600 leg in the DMR but went out fast anyway. She took the lead and then extended it to a winning margin of 2.2 seconds. Combined with the 2nd place finish in the DMR and a 3rd place in the 4 x 400, the team would finish 3rd as a team with 22 pts, 2 pts behind 2nd place Lenape. The 4 x 800 would run in the National Championships and replace Morgan Clark with Allie Flott and Ashley Higginson with Meryl Wimberley and run a school and Freehold District record of 9:25.58 to finish 7th. The 4 x mile would again break the State record and win the National Championship. Team Splits:

From left to right: Arianna Sakoutis, Colleen Megerle, Delia Russo, Natalie Shapiro |
It had been a very cold, snowy winter, which had slowed down the process of fast training. The Cougars had run 10:18.28 in finishing 2nd in the Monmouth County Relay Champs. Newcomer, Arianna Sakoutis, had started as a sprinter but had then run a 2:32 800 at the Colts Neck Inv and 2:25 in the Monmouth County Champs. She was added to the 4 x 800 as they faced top seeded Woodbridge. Miscounting the laps, Arianna suddenly realized it was the last lap and exploded from 5th to a 20 meter lead as she handed off to Natalie Shapiro in 2:26.6. Natalie went out a little fast but forced the Woodbridge girl to go out even faster. She held on to the 20 meter lead, running 2:28.9. Delia Russo lost a few yards but still held the lead with her 2:29.5. Colleen Megerle would anchor against Woodbridge star Trinity Eason, who had run 2:15.08 the previous spring. Eason quickly caught up and sat on Colleen, wanting to wait until the last lap to take the lead. They held that position until the backstretch of the last lap where Colleen slowly accelerated and started to gain a bigger lead. Off the last turn, Colleen accelerated more and was able to push the advantage to 2.6 seconds by the finish. The team did not get a chance to run another 4 x 800 the rest of the winter season. From left to right: Catie Anderson, Arianna Sakoutis, Colleen Megerle, Eva Gibson |
The team had not run a serious 4 x 800, where everyone had been healthy, all spring. They had won the Central Jersey Group III 4 x 800 with a time of 10:00.41. It would take a great race to win the spring title. Arianna, struggling with sore shins, led off and ran 2:23.2, putting the team in 4th place, 3.5 seconds behind Seneca, the leader. It was her fastest time all spring. Eva Gibson went out in a personal best of 66.6, for a 400, and held on to hand off to Catie Anderson in 3rd, 6.5 seconds behind Seneca, still the leader. It was a season best for the 800. Catie did not panic and slowly moved into 2nd and then cut into Seneca's lead. Catie was only 1 sec slower than her personal best. The lead was now down to a 4 seconds. The problem was, the anchor leg for Seneca, had beat Colleen in the 1600 earlier in the day and Colleen was 4 seconds behind her. Colleen moved up quickly, but under control, and was able to catch the leader 370 meters into the race. She tried to pass her, got inches ahead, but the Senaca girl surged back to the lead and the race was on. Colleen sat behind her on the backstretch, before the Senaca girl, picked the pace up with 200 to go. The girl surged again with 120 meters to go as they entered the homestretch, a foot apart. Colleen drew beside her with 60 meters to go and they ran shoulder to shoulder until 30 meters to go, where Colleen went to her arms and the Seneca girl cracked. The Cougars would win by just .47 of a second. Collen's anchor leg time of 2:14.7 was a personal best. Team Splits:

The Cougars had opened the season with a win at the Monmouth County Relays in 12:40.81. A good early season time in their first meet of the season. After getting two more meets in, they were excited for the Group III State Relays. After a delay of three days, due to a winter storm, they were ready to go. Delia Russo, coming off a fever that would not have allowed her to compete, if it had been three day before, led until the last lap, where the lingering effects of the illness, took it's toll. She handed off in 2nd, behind Shawnee, in 3:58.1, about 3 seconds behind. Sasha Lerner, running with the distance team for the first time, held it to 3 seconds and ran a personal best 62.9. Arianna Sakoutis was passd by Middletown South in the first 400, before she accelerated in the last 200 and handed off to Colleen Megerle, with a 4 second lead. Kathleen Shay of Middletown South closed the gap to about 2 seconds before Colleen slowly pulled away. Colleen really gapped the field, running a very fast last 400, to win by just short of 13 seconds. As a team, the Cougars finished 2nd, tying their best finish ever at the State Relays. The DMR team would then run 12:17.69 at the Varsity Classic to qualify for the Nationals. They would then run 12:11.26 to qualify for the Championship of America race at the Penn Relays. Team Splits:

The team had started the season with a disappointing 3rd at the Monmouth County Champs in 9:52.11. Then they had to wait an additional 3 days for the meet to arrive due to a winter storm. The team was also trying to score as many points as possible to finish high as a team. Earlier in the meet, the Cougars had won the Distance Medley Relay but only Arianna Sakoutis would be doubling back. She would lead off. Just like the year before, the leadoff leg was slow and Arianna used her superior speed to go from 2nd to a 4 second lead in the last lap in 2:28.0. Catie Anderson increased the lead to 5 seconds with her 2:30.1 leg. Natalie Shapiro took her 1st lap out strong to force any chasers to go out fast and it paid off as she increased the lead to 13 seconds, running 2:27.1. Lilly Shapiro went out strong enough to keep any chasers away and then finished in 2:27.5 to win by almost 21 seconds. The team won but had a hard time running fast all by themselves. The team as a whole would finish 2nd, tying their best finish ever. They would then run faster at the Varsity Classic in a time of 9:44.65. Team Splits:

|
From left to right: Arianna Sakoutis, Colleen Megerle, Natalie Shapiro, Eva Gibson |
The team had struggled with losing Catie Anderson for the season, Natalie Shapiro with mono and Colleen Megerle with a sore hip. They didn't have the depth they had counted on to run individual and relays. The team was only 6th in the Monmouth County Champs in 9:55.34. At the Central Jersey Group III Champs, they had finished 2nd behind Middletown South but had only run 9:50.64. They would need to run between 9:30 and 9:35 to win and they were defending champs. They now had both Natalie and Colleen back. Eva Gibson lead off and stayed in a huge pack through 600. She was able to hand off in 4th in 2:23.8. It was her fastest time of the year. Natalie Shapiro then took over, briefly fell back to 5th before moving up and taking the lead with 390 meters to go. She would run 2:21.1, her fastest of the year and hand off with a 3 sec lead. Arianna Sakoutis took over and ran 2:23.8, by herself, and expanded the lead to 7 secs. Colleen Megerle, stayed in control the first lap to save something extra for the last lap. The chase teams closed the gap to 5 secs with a lap to go , but they got no closer. She would extend the lead back to almost 6 secs to finish in 9:29.15. It would be Colts Neck's 4th straight 4 x 800 title, going back to winter and spring in 2018 and winter and spring in 2019. They would then finish 6th in the Meet of Champions in 9:32.87. From left to right: Kelsey Nager, Lilly Shapiro, Arianna Sakoutis, Natalie Shapiro |
The team had started the season with a win at the Monmouth County Champs in 12:28.28, #1 NJ and #2 US at the time, with Ava Wilmot in the 800. They had beaten Middletown South by 10 secs but all of the Middletown South girls were in their 2nd race and the CN girls had fresh legs in the 1200 and 1600. The CN girls knew the race would be close as it was the first event so both teams would be fresh. A winter storm hit North Jersey on the original meet date, so the meet was delayed 3 days. Natalie Shapiro would lead off but was fighting a cold. We decided to let the first 400 be slow and then pick the pace up with 3 laps to go so there would be less chance of blowing up. It was so slow that Natalie was forced to take the lead after the 400. She would hold the lead until 50 meters to go where she was passed by Allentown and Middletown South. Kelsey Nager would move into 2nd at the 200 and then catch Allentown with 30 meters to go to hand off to Arianna Sakoutis with a 1 meter lead. Arianna would fall back to 2nd place as a pack of five hit one lap to go before she blasted away from the field to hand off with 5 meter lead over Middletown South. Lilly Shapiro ran a quick 1st 400 to take the sting out of the chasers but Middletown South would then stay on right on her until the last lap. At that point, Lilly would pull away in the last straight for a 1 sec win in 12:25.52, 3 secs faster than the Monmouth County Relays. The team would then switch Kelsey with Sasha Lerner in the 400 and finish 2nd in the Eastern States Champs, running 11:58.89, #1 NJ, #3 US time. Going into the Nationals with a chance to place in the top 6 and make All-American, the Nationals would be cancelled 36 hours before the start due to the coronavirus. Team Splits:

The team had started the season finishing 4th at the Monmouth County Champs in 10:01.85, using frosh, Olivia Petschauer and junior Kavita Shah in the lineup. The plan was to run the big guns in the State Relays. The meet was delayed 3 days due to a winter storm in North Jersey. The team was also trying to score as many points as possible to finish high as a team. Earlier in the meet, the Cougars had won the Distance Medley Relay and now only Ava had fresh legs. Could they win with three doubling back? WWPN would open a 3+ sec lead by the 400 of the opening leg with a huge pack chasing from behind. The lead was 4 secs with a lap to go before Arianna Sakoutis took off and passed her with 60m to go to hand off with a 2 sec lead. Ava Wilmot then made the chasers work hard to catch up and then extended the lead to 4 secs. Natalie Shapiro would run the fastest split of the race and once she handed off, the race was over. She gave her sister a 15 sec lead. Lilly Shapiro would extend the lead to almost 21 secs to seal the victory. It was the Cougars 3rd straight 4 x 800 title for winter track and the 5th straight including spring track. It was Arianna Sakoutis' 7th State Relay title in her CN career. Wow! Team Splits:

difference was that this race would not only be for relay gold but
also for the Group III State team title. CN entered this race, the
last event of the meet, trailing Northern Highlands by 1 pt. If they
beat Northern Highlands, they would win, but Northern Highlands was seeded
3rd, while CN was seeded 4th. CN had used Ava Suhocki in the Central

From left to right: Olivia Petschauer, Nikki Cataneo, Lilly Shapiro, Ashley Pavlovsky |
It was a weird week for the Lady Cougars. They
were hoping to win the team title in the Group III State Relays for the
first time. In order to do that they were trying to spread everyone
out to cover the most events and keep everyone fresh. The original
1200 leg was Presslie Mariner but she strained her knee. Ava Wilmot
moved up to the spot but came down with the flu the night before.
Olivia Petschauer was called at 6:45 am and told to get to the meet earlier
than expected to add the 1200 to her 800/400 day. The plan was to have
Olivia run as easy as possible, under 4:00, and stay within 4-5 secs of
first. She handed off in 2nd and ran 3:59.7. She was 6 secs back
of Toms River South. Nikki Cataneo then took over and held on to 2nd,
running her fastest time of the year (66.2). Ashley Pavlovsky took the
baton about 6+ secs back and it took her only 1 lap to catch up (probably a
little too quick). She held on to the lead as Toms River South and
Montgomery handed off .5 and 1.5 secs behind her. You now had Lilly
Shapiro, Lilly Oliver (Toms River South) and Caroline Mehlhorn (Montgomery),
all sub 5:00 1600m runners together for the anchor leg. North
Hunterdon had run 12:50 in the unseeded heat so the trio had to run at least
5:10 to finish ahead of them. Lilly hit the 400 in 75.0 with the three
in single file. The pace slowed slightly to 78.8 and Mehlhorn had
fallen off. Feeling Oliver on her back, Lilly picked it back up to
75.3 and Oliver hung on. Lilly snuck a peek back and picked it up more
and she gradually pulled away to a 3 sec win. It was the 3rd straight
DMR title for Colts Neck and it was worth 10 pts in the team battle. Team Splits:

The team knew they would be dangerous in the relays this year and they had a lot of depth. With the Millrose Games Trials 4 x 800 coming up early the next week, they used a "B" team at the Monmouth County Champs to get their DMR State qualifier. Eren Alpa, Joe Louro, Lucas Sanginari and Jay Adimala finished 6th in 11:30.93. The Boys had not won a State Relay title since 2006 and knew it. John Shapiro led off in the 1200, sitting back in 7th place through the 400, he moved up to 2nd by the 600 onto Ocean City's shoulder. He took the lead at 700 and strung out the field handing off in 1st with a 1 second lead over Summit. Charlie Labkovski fell back to 3rd but closed back in the last 50 meters. He handed off in 3rd but Summit, Morris Hills and CN were all together, with Winslow just behind. Andrew Krok, who would be anchoring the Sprint Medley Relay later, was told to just get the lead but save energy for the later race. Winslow would go out real fast the first 400 and open a 10 meter lead over Andrew. Andrew would then catch Winslow with 100 to go and handoff with an 8 meter lead. With Hunter anchoring in the 1600, Morris Hills passed him after just 200 meters. They would lead until 550 to go when Hunter surged into the lead and gradually extended the lead to 5 seconds at the finish. The team of Jacob McNamara, John Shapiro, Andrew Krok and Hunter Celkupa had then run a NJ #1 time of 8:04.42 to win the Millrose Games Trials, just 4 days before the Group III State Relays. Having won the DMR earlier in the meet, CN went with 3 fresh legs. Jay Adimala got off to a great start and took the lead after 100 meters. The sophomore held the lead all the way through as he handed off in first with a 2 meter lead over North Hunterdon and Morris Hills. Lucas Sanginari held the lead for 400 but felt the fast pace in the last 300 and fell back to 4th. Hunter Celkupa received the baton 4 seconds behind the leader, North Hunterdon. He closed to 2 secs at the 400 and caught the leader with 250 to go. He immediately took the lead and handed off with a 2 sec lead. Jacob McNamara held the lead until 100 meters to go where the North Hunterdon anchor tried to pass. Jacob fought him off and then pulled away to win by less than 1 second. The team had run 8:20 at the very first meet to get a qualifying time for the State Relays with Ryan Brush. For this meet, Ryan had been replaced by Mason McQuagge. Earlier in the meet, the Distance Medley Relay had finished 2nd to Randolph. Hunter Celkupa was coming off being sick; Jay Adimala had gone out in 2:02.5 in the 1600 leg of the DMR and was dead; and Dom Marino had gone out under 60.0 for the 1st time in his 800 leg. Mason had the only fresh legs as the team tried to defend their title. They were facing NJ#2 North Hunterdon (8:02), NJ#5 Winslow (8:04) and NJ#7 Morris Hills (8:10). Mason got out well, was 6th at the 400 and would hand off in a pack of 3 fighting for 4th thru 6th. He was 5.5 secs behind North Hunterdon and 2 secs behind Winslow. North Hunterdon used their weak leg on the 2nd lag and Winslow quickly caught him. Jay was still down by 5 secs at the 400 when he really started to close the gap as the leaders started to fade. He would handoff 3 meters behind Winslow as North Hunterdon fell back to 3rd. Dom immediately sat on the Winslow runner as North Hunterdon closed the gap and caught the two leaders. Dom completed his 2nd race of the day with a new personal best as Hunter received the baton 8 meters behind Winslow and 2 meters behind NH. Hunter quickly caught up and Winslow, NH and Colts Neck were single file. NH and CN went by Winslow at 300 to go and Hunter took the lead with 200 to go. On the final turn, NH came up and they hit the homestretch shoulder-to-shoulder. They stayed that way until the finsh as Hunter won by just .22. The time ended up being the fastest time of all the 6 group relays. Team Splits:
